MFA Technology has come a long way. It started in 2004 with the Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12) signed by President George W. Bush to develop MFA, which became known as the CAC (Common Access Card), followed by PIV (Personal Identity Verification) for military and government agencies.
In 2013-2014, FIDO was developed by the FIDO Alliance as an open standard for strong authentication with great interoperability. The long-term goal was to securely retire passwords. Since then, the FIDO alliance (including FEITIAN Technologies as a board member) further developed protocols such as U2F, CTAP1 and eventually FIDO2 (or WebAuthN) to really fulfill the promise of a passwordless future. Recently, Microsoft announced that all its consumer users can opt for bypassing passwords entirely.
With phishing-resistant, tamper proof cryptographic hardware, spoof proof modernized PKI (public key infrastructure) binding the signature into distinct key pairs with no shared secret (no spill-over), no driver or middle-ware installation required (minimizing attack vectors), FIDO security keys are the MFA option that’s more secure and easier to setup.
Furthermore, MFA technology such as FIDO2 biometric keys has developed to a near-perfect point where it is very simple to setup and use, and cost-effective to gain the security for everyone’s peace of mind.
